Maybe you love the changing of the leaves, the crispness of the air, and the snap in the weather. I love the thought of holidays coming and getting together with family. The summer vacations are great, everyone hitting the beach, going out for a bite, or napping the afternoon away. Getting away in the months of Oct., Nov., and Dec. make me think of connecting with family in a slower paced manner. Inviting family, checking the list of who brings what for the family meals, and planning a scavenger hunt for the little ones is a great start to a family fun visit. We have an old trunk bought at a yard sale that we fill with “pirate” treasures that we bury on the beach. We make a treasure map with about ten clues that each clue takes the ‘little ones’ a step closer to the Pirates Chest. We make the clues the kids have to think about; sometimes about things they may find at the beach, or an inside joke of some sort, or describing a location with another clue hidden there. Eventually they guess the answers that lead them to the ‘X’ that marks the spot of the buried treasure chest. After digging it out they squeal with delight of the loot they find.
An adult pastime is making the clam chowda in ‘The Great Big Pot’, which can also be sort of a scavenger hunt depending on the time of year. Depending on the season, we actually have family members that fish, clams, and set crab traps to capture the fresh ingredients. Otherwise we search in the local fisheries for our stock. After getting the list of items needed the chowda cook off creation begins. Everyone pitches in chopping, stirring, and making bacon for the stock. Red and White in huge pots simmering for hours waiting for the taste test to start. Homemade bread to be served with it, bread bowls if we can find them. What a great comfort food that can fill you and work for lunch and dinner menus.
It seems after a good meal our family has a sweet tooth calling, so we try to fill that need by either baking a few items, or putting together a cornucopia of treats of everyone’s favorites. You’ll find circus peanuts and licorice to chocolate, fudge, and taffy in this bountiful bouquet. They adults light up as well as the kids in my family! Sticky buns, brownies, chocolate chip cookies are a few of the standbys and must haves during our family get together for dessert or breakfast.
Let the games begin! There is nothing like a huge table of family playing Balderdash! I love the nonsense we all come up with and having to choose one is just ridiculous. WE roar with laughter, slits for eyes, and tears running down our cheeks while picking a ludicrous answer. It really is a fun game. For the quiet times working on a puzzle with the ocean views surrounding you gives you a sense of accomplishment when putting in the last piece. The wii gets a fair share of time with the little ones mastering their sport skills as well as being Mario.
When night falls we hate to go to bed. Some who should go sooner than later remain standing into the wee hours, paying for it later. One by one they topple saying goodnight and see you in the morning light. When tucked in bed we listen to the ocean lulling us off to a dreamscape, frolicking in the waves. We dream of memories as kids, and how blessed we are now raising our own in the same location and traditions.
The morning brings french toast, scramble eggs and Trenton Pork Roll, or course. With barely any elbow room at the kitchen table new conversations start from several with everyone chiming in, talking over one another, and laughing from sleep deprivation. The slits begin, and a new day starts to unfold.
During a stormy weather visit the outdoors becomes a challenge we all venture out into for one thing or another (food or chocolate). We tell stories of the rushing waters on the Blvd. we nearly escaped, or the white capes on the bay lapping over the bulkheads. The storm clouds rolling in from the mainland keep us guessing of when ‘it’ will hit, and how hard, if even. The drama unfolds with the thunder and lightning it calls us to huddle by the windows to watch Mother Nature takes its wrath out over the ocean. The night storms are more dramatic with total darkness over the ocean then a flash of daylight out to sea. Snow storms are a magical sight on LBI. Floating snowflakes swirl as gusts of wind flock them over the dunes onto the icy edge of the jetties. The blanket of white on the beach brings out cross country skiers, drifts producing mogul size sled hills, or snowboarding jumps. These can have all the snow bunnies hopping. Making a snowman in the street is fun, knowing it will last until thaw with no traffic. Building your frosty friend by the water you watch the waves shrink it and make it disapear.
If going out on the town means mini golf so be it. One, with his own club, come on… I feel packing extra golf balls would be more productive. The sibling rivalry begins, challenging words thrown out randomly, and a few accidental ankle clunks with a club while walking past gets the game rolling. There is nothing like winning the game by score, or losing and winning the free game at the end. Everybody wins! The poor losers grumble into the day and threaten to beat the pants off you next time.
Taking our family walks on the beach is an all-time favorite. We compare shells we find like they are ancient treasures never been seen by the naked eye before. The find of a full snail shell brings delight to all searching. We’ve look for the smallest shell to the biggest clam shell, competitiveness runs high in our family, which brings us such delight. From the loudness, most outgoing to the shyest we all get our digs in at some point with our loving sparing and jesting. The lighthouse is a special stop to check out the boats, rocks, and ‘Ole Barney’ himself; the nature trail brings the aroma of birch beer to air with the Sassafras trees, and the soft beauty of the Rugosa Rose winds in and out of the path.
A favorite at night is watching “The Family Dog”. The characters we all relate to, and we have owned a dog portrayed in it at one time or another. The show brings down the house kids and adults alike and produces the slits and tears with its simple everyday chaos with family and pets. Watching some kid movies with the gang can have lasting impressions, and invoke the inside jokes throughout the years.
The final day of packing up and gathering belongings is a sad one. Waving goodbyes with pictures being snapped and the last long looks at the beach can bring a tear to the eye. Some make stops picking up some sale items at shops on the way home, as we look forward to the next get together and reflect on the fabulous family we are blessed with. LBI is a great place to make your family memories year round. Make a point to take the time to be with your loved ones. Reconnect, relax and start some new family traditions at the beach. Snap the holiday photo while you are here with the crew and send it to another layer of extended family with an invite to grow the celebration next time. www.LBI-Vacation.com

A Fish Story
Definition of Fishing by Wikipedia
Fishing- Fishing is the activity of trying to catch fish. Fish are normally caught in the wild. Techniques for catching fish include hand gathering, spearing, netting, angling and trapping.
The term fishing may be applied to catching other aquatic animals such as molluscs, cephalopods, crustaceans, and echinoderms. The term is not normally applied to catching farmed fish, or to aquatic mammals, such as whales, where the term whaling is more appropriate.
According to FAO statistics, the total number of commercial fishermen and fish farmers is estimated to be 38 million. Fisheries and aquaculture provide direct and indirect employment to over 500 million people.[1] In 2005, the worldwide per capita consumption of fish captured from wild fisheries was 14.4 kilograms, with an additional 7.4 kilograms harvested from fish farms.[2] In addition to providing food, modern fishing is also a recreational pastime.
Laymen’s Definition of Fishing
Fishing – The activity of telling stories of the one that got away, with a cooler by your side, sun in your face, dog chasing seagulls, and baiting a hook continuously.
The term fishing may be applied to asking a loved one when a good time would be to do the long overdue taxes with the accountant (that is a fisherman). Knowing they hate doing the taxes. Informing them that it will take up most of the early morning into the day ensures that they will take the bait and decline the invitation during striper season.
Do you have an obsession for what lies beneath the surface of the water? Is your preference to pack it in with a few friends and sit for hours watching the waves curl? Is it surf fishing or boat fishing you live for? At the end of the day do you have the prize fish up from the deep? Is it posted on Facebook in a flash? Either way you practice your sport the mysterious obsession of what comes up from the deep is exciting.
LBI is a great place to cast a line
Striper Season is upon us and folks are bringing in 12 -24 pounders and some up to 54 lb. If you like the challenge, join in! The 58th Annual Long Beach Island Surf Classic 2012 is starting. Come on down, it’s only a tank of gas away for most. Be the one who drops a line and pulls out the big one!

LBI Chowderfest 2012
CHOWDER FEST Sept. 29-30 rent Beach House Retreats in Beach Haven Crest, NJ
I will tell you a little about Chowder Fest if you have never been before.
All the restaurants compete for the best Red and White Chowder. They decorate their booths to reflect their business or style or personalities they want to get across, and cook all Sat.night. into the Sun.morning preparing for the thousands that come to taste it and judge it. You get to vote on each soup, which is the best, and on their booths. It is amazing how the soups taste so different, and how some stand out to be so much better, you wonder what the others were thinking!! There are Bands, Beer Trucks, and the Bay Village Stores are hopping with their wares, and discounts. Local real estate agencies giving away bags, pens, magnet, chip clips etc., my kids enjoy gathering these free items. If you are brave try the clam fudge at the fudge shop! :) The Bakery's are clearing shelves too!
It is great fun for adults, my kids enjoy it, but small kids it is tough on due to being so small and strollers are not permitted in soup tent areas, back packed kids are a solid solution. There is a playground on the bayside of the tents to let the kiddies run loose on when they get the urge to run wild.
The day before tasting on Sat. local shops discount their stock, it is a shoppers dream, cheap tees, sandals, jewelery, sweats, sweaters, and more. Having the holidays rifght around the corner it is a easy way to "git-r-done"! The Mod Hatter is a great place to pick up some funny, awesome, costumes for Halloween at a great price, and they sell hats that are a hoot (that show up at night Nardi's and some other local bars). The local bars that close for the season usually have great specials on drinks and food. The best bands are playing this weekend at the bars, and at the festival.
It is kind of the last hurrah on the Island, traffic lights may be off already, all the stores are pushing Holiday Seashore Type Gifts at great prices, and the weather is usually still in the mid 70's or so. We have been in the ocean until Nov. some years. There are no guards, but the ocean can be calm, warm and inviting for bathers and surfing. I am down the street from the Brighton Beach Surf Shop and they are still giving surf lessons during this time. It also a nice time to rent bikes, which is at the Acme Surf and Skate at the end of the street . The Beach Theater next to the Acme is ten blocks and is still open I believe if you want to walk over to see a movie. And the Ice cream shops are also pushing out ice cream to clear out for the winter.
This time of year the Monarch Butterflies are hitting the sky in force passing through the Island to get home. It is a beautiful sight, and some years the dunes are filled with the Halloween Colored Wings of Flight.
Bring your cameras for the butterfly flights, the sunrises and sunsets are to die for, and the moonrise is really grand after watching the sun do it's tricks... The ocean is very picturesque, and it is a nice time to snap off some shots for your Holiday Cards drop them at CVS and be a head of the game.
It is a nice time to get together with friends, and family to share in the tasting experience, grab some bargains, and enjoy the last signs of summer. For a great place to stay look me up: http://www.lbi-vacation.com

We Want You to join us at the LBI 8th Annual Dune Grass Planting (Long Beach Island, NJ) Sat. Oct. 13, 2012
You’ve seen some of the dunes on LBI, they are in serious trouble. Pictured
Here are our dunes on 85th St. beach in Beach Haven Crest. We were wiped out in the 2009 storms, lost all our fencing, and some of the trees on the one side, and we have hardly any grass to speak of. We had the ocean come down our street 5 times during one storm, it was a nightmare come true. Luckily we had no damage. We went to 5:00 mass at St. Francis, because I couldn’t just sit in the house and watch it, prayed our heads off, and the storm calmed down, and the ocean receded. Thank the Lord!
If anyone is in need of community service, here is a great way to earn some time and have fun doing it. Two hours of your time can help save homes. We are inviting Boy Scouts and Girls Scout Troops that are looking for some camping time to join in and get service time also. Troops may sleep on the beach Friday night. Youth Groups, Geocachers, High School Kids, Church Groups, come and join in the fun, the more the Merrier! All are welcome to this event.
Why not bring your friends and family down for a nice weekend on LBI? Be a part of restoring the dunes on the island you all love to visit in the summer. The island has many stores and restaurants open, and are having great end of season sales, take home a LBI souvenir, or start your holiday shopping. Motels are open, bands are playing on weekends, and the weather is still quite nice in Oct. usually. This is a nice time to take a candid shot for your holiday card, plan ahead and bring pirate costumes, Santa hats, or matching attire, whatever you want to make your card POP this year. Plan a nice getaway to LBI on this weekend if you have nothing going on. Come in Friday night, go out to dinner, catch a band, see a play at Surflight ( An Evening with Lucille Ball is playing that weekend), or check out a movie. I am sure many will find many things to do the rest of the weekend. It’s a great time of year to learn how to surf, take a kayak out in the bay, do some surf fishing, playground hopping, or just do some old fashion beachcombing. Enjoy a low key weekend with the kids, and help LBI stay intact preparing for Mother Nature’s Winters Escapades.
Go to www.Lorrysmotel.com to learn more and to fill in the MANDATORY Sign Up (lets us know ASAP how much dune grass to get). Please note, in comments section of sign up, if you are a troop so we can get in touch with you about camping details, cut off is by Oct. 1 to sign up to camp. Check in on Oct. 13th is from 9-11:30 am, at the Wildlife Preserve at the end of the island in Holgate. You will receive your assigned beach, then you can grab breakfast is needed, and planting is from 12 until 2pm. Afterwards at 3pm there is a Free BBQ down in Holgate at Lorry’s Motel (a great place to stay, if you need a room for the weekend). Call after you sign up online to confirm regitration. Beach Haven Crest, on Long Beach Island, NJ is a Great Family Friendly Destination
We have stayed in Beach Haven Crest on LBI, NJ for the past 53 years, I am 3rd generation coming, and my great nieces and nephews are 4th generation. We live here year round. We have found that the Beach Haven Crest area of the Island is great for all ages from babies to seniors. We love the fact that it is a slower paced part of the island, which makes it a safe walking, biking, stroller friendly spot. In our 10 block radius we have a surf shop with daily lessons, bike rentals and skate shop, Kubel’s Too Restaurant and Liquor Store, Joey’s Pizza, Pinzamino’s Italian Restaurant, Garden State Gas Station, Pinky’s Shrimp Take Out Seafood, Pottery Shop, Dune’s Fresh Produce Market and Deli, Skipper Dipper Ice Cream Shop, Frank’s Theater 4 Plex, Acme Market, and Here’s the Scoop Ice Cream.
We Adults love the Bike Rentals, Acme being so close, 3 eateries, and Kubel’s Too Happy Hour with Entertaining DJ and bands, cheap drinks and appetizers that are soft on the wallet. The Teens love the Joey’s Pizza, Surf Shop, Bike Rentals, Movie Theater, and Ice Cream Shops. The Little ones love to walk to the surf shop for some candy, toys and kites, and when isn’t ice cream a hit?
Just a few more blocks down you are at the Policemen Bay Beach with a guard and shallow waters to discover with nets and buckets. Bring your beach badge badges, and gear and let the little ones loose on a great fish tank of explorations. We have caught, needle nose eels 5 inches long, fluke 4 inches long, snails, hermits, crabs, spider crabs, and many different types of minnows. It is as much fun to catch the critters as it is to see the little ones faces that have caught them, I highly recommend taking the time to check it out!
We run Beach House Retreats, 113 East 85 th Street, Beach Haven Crest, NJ 08008, 609-607-9938. Check us out at : www.LBI-Vacation.com
We specialize in Vacations, Intimate Weddings, and Retreats of all kinds. The house slept 16 and had a huge kitchen, 2 living rooms, 5 bedrooms, 2 baths, laundry room, and huge rooftop deck, great backyard with grill, 2 tables, and large bench seating surrounding a fire pit, with outside shower. The house was beautiful, the ocean views were breath taking, and being 3rd from the beach made it a snap to get kids/seniors up to the bathroom. The beach is a guarded swimmers and surfing beach so after the kids take lessons they can surf with a guard watching them, what a relief having their extra eyes on them!
I like the fact the kids can get out on their own by foot and bike to a few spots close by without having to go into Beach Haven with all the traffic and crowds. We felt more secure knowing there was plenty to keep them happy and entertained right here. We loved being able to park the cars and bike to the store for food, movies, dinner, or ice cream. When taking our walks the streets weren’t as congested as Beach Haven, and the traffic isn’t as fast as it is down in Loveladies area, where crossing the streets is tricky.
We love the month of June to do the shore. The weather is already in the high 80’s the past 5 years, and the water is between 68- 78 depending on the wind direction, and gulf streams presence. The rental prices are cheaper and the house selection is wide open. I have noticed that the last weeks of school has been a complete time of fluff, no learning, just movies, and assemblies of ways to entertain the kids until the last day. We have opted to vacation a few times. Long weekends are a easy also during this time if you don’t want to miss the week of school.
We have gone to many activities on Long Beach Island that were free run by different municipalities which include: bike safety demos with prizes, concerts of great Rock/Reggae/Buffet bands, barbershop choirs, big band concerts, Environmental Demos, Flea Markets, Craft Shows, and more.
Long Beach Island is a quick ride from the NJ Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway. We come through the Pines on Rt. 539 and is a nice quiet ride and usually without much traffic.
We love LBI, it is a much slower paced family oriented resort. The police are always visible to assure your safety, they also give free ice cream coupons when they catch kids obeying laws, (bike helmets, riding with traffic, crossing at street lights). I think that is a great way for kids to see that Police are their friends and are here if they need them while on vacation. I love the many different restaurants and price points that everyone can find a place that fits their budget. There is a great Play house called “Surflight Theater” that brings down the house every night with entertaining plays, concerts, and comedy, along with weekly children’s play. We like the Showplace Ice Cream Parlor next door that has a singing staff that also is amusing for all ages. If you aren’t tired out from the beach by now or the weather is a little off, go to the Water Park at Fantasy Island Amusements to run the kids wild, it is perfect for all ages, between the Lazy Rives, Fast Slides, Baby Wading Park, and the Mini Golf, Arcade, and Amusement Rides next door. If you are able to drop kids to do water park, enjoy shopping and eating over at Bay Village where you can find some great buys, and food. Don’t forget the Fudge, Bakery and the awesome Pizza there.
So if you are looking for a great place to go with all ages for some good clean fun in the sun, come leave your family footprint on LBI the place for families!

CHOWDER FEST
There is a playground on the bay side of the tents to let the kiddies run loose on when they get the urge to run wild.
The day before tasting on Sat. local shops discount their stock, grab some cheap prices on :tees, sandals, sweaters, sweats, jewelry, and more. The Mod Hatter is a great place to pick up some funny, awesome , costumes for Halloween at a great price, and they sell hats that are a hoot (that show up at night Nardi's and some other local bars).
If you are looking for a nice place to stay with a group go to my site: http://www.lbi-vacation.com/
